Une autre passion

Ballet based on St Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach

Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève
Director Philippe Cohen

World premiere

Duration : approx. 1:20 (without intermission)

The reality of human suffering surrounds us: the cancer ward, Aleppo and Mosul, mental illness, substance abuse… These are also our passions. When JS Bach wrote his St Matthew Passion, the “passion” he refers to is more the agony and death of Jesus Christ than strong emotions or desires. For this “Other Passion”, constructed from elements of Bach’s great score, Swedish choreographer and film director Pontus Lidberg will explore the universal themes of suffering, passion and desire. His new production for the Geneva Ballet Company removes the narrative of Jesus’ death to focus instead on an abstract constellation of dance and images, uniting grief and beauty, from which we may reflect upon our relationship to the images of suffering and death that surround us.
