Concert with the ladies of the Grand Théâtre Opera Chorus

Director Alan Woodbridge

Benjamin Britten wrote A Ceremony of Carols 1942 at sea on his return from the USA, a harp manual in one hand and a recently purchased copy of medieval English verse in the other. The result is thirty minutes of exquisite choral escapism that transports by its simplicity and its beautiful evocation of joy, wonder and reverence. A central harp solo conjures up the stillness of heavy, falling snow, and a strange birth. His own Missa Brevis (arranged with harp), Verdi’s ‘Laudi’ (from his Quattro pezzi sacri) and the Ave Maria by Gustav Holst, complete a scintillating programme for the ladies of the Grand Théâtre Opera Chorus to be sung by candlelight
