Fantasio

From 1872 Fantasio, which preceded The Tales of Hoffmann, was no longer performed. Today it rises from the ashes thanks to a co-production with the Opéra Comique. Transformed into a libretto by Paul de Musset, Alfred de Musset’s text takes on an operatic spirit.

Figaro-ci, Figaro-là!

To introduce young, and less young, audiences to the sometimes complex world of opera, the Grand Théâtre de Genève invites you to discover Figaro-ci, Figaro-là !. The performance is specially designed as an introduction to opera, and pays tribute to one of the pivotal characters in opera in general, and this season in particular: Figaro.

Although Mascagni and Leoncavallo never worked together, Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci have become inseparable in the operatic world. As each is too court to make up a full evening’s performance, they found themselves on the same bill at the Met one evening in 1895. They have since become inseparable.

Il Barbiere di Siviglia

In 1815, Gioachino Rossini signed a contract to write an opera based on the play Le barbier de Séville. The premiere was a failure because Paisiello and his followers did their best to cause the audience to dislike Rossini’s work. Soon to be performed abroad, the Barbiere di Siviglia became a roaring success. It has remained to this date one of the world’s most performed operas.

Le Nozze di Figaro

La folle journée, ou le mariage de Figaro continues Le Barbier de Séville, and Mozart chose this second play to write an opera with an Italian libretto by Da Ponte. This first-time collaboration between Mozart and Da Ponte was instantly successful. The ensembles speak to Da Ponte’s dramaturgical understanding of Mozart’s musical transcription.

Figaro Gets A Divorce

You know of Figaro working as barber and then serving Count Almaviva. But what happens to couples after the first two parts of the Trilogy written by Beaumarchais. David Poutney, who commissioned this composition by Elena Langer, was inspired for his libretto by two theatrical follow-ups, Beaumarchais’s own La mère coupable and Ödön von Horváh’s 1936 play, Figaro läßt sich scheiden. Figaro Gets a Divorce tells the story of Susanna leaving Figaro because he refuses to give her the child she wants.
