La folle journée, ou le mariage de Figaro continues Le Barbier de Séville, and Mozart chose this second play to write an opera with an Italian libretto by Da Ponte. This first-time collaboration between Mozart and Da Ponte was instantly successful. The ensembles speak to Da Ponte’s dramaturgical understanding of Mozart’s musical transcription. They also drive the opera, with the main characters confronting each other, exchanging, and evolving on a music that is complex and intertwined on paper but playful and pleasant to listen to. Mozart uses a wide dramatic range going from the comic to the tragic. The characters, who mirror the multiple facets of the work, are not only entertaining but also rich, deep and above all human.

"There is, in all our bosoms, a small still voice which unceasing cries—Woman, be as beautiful as thou canst, as virtuous as thou wilt, but, at all events, be conspicuous, be talk’d about."
Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, Le Mariage de Figaro
