Without doubt, she has some irresistible arguments. Is she seductive? Is she beautiful and charismatic? One thing is certain, her credo is freedom. She has surged forth from Mérimée’s pen and been set to music by Bizet, a worthy successor of Charles Gounod. Despite a setback with its creation and the glacial reception by a public, which was offended by the indecency of the heroine - as was the director of the Salle Favart – the work is enjoying a rapturous success across the whole of Europe. The realists claimed it as a model, especially for its dramatic clarity and the passionate intensity of its protagonists. Carmen, the archetype of the liberated woman, flies in the face of the traditional codes of behaviour. Carmen, the dream role of every mezzo-soprano, is more than a seductress, she ranks with Orpheus, Faust and Don Juan in the Pantheon of mythical characters. At their first-level of appreciation of the work, the opening night audience did not understand this opera, which was later to become a global success. And what if we all have a little of Carmen in us?
