First day of Der Ring des Nibelungen in 3 acts by Richard Wagner
Libretto by the composer. Premiered at the Königliches Hof - National Theatre Munich on 26 June 1870.
Reprise of the production by Dieter Dorn & Jürgen Rose (2013-14)
Sung in German with English and French surtitles
Duration: approx. 4h40 (with two intermissions)
Following their remarkable production of Das Rheingold, Dieter Dorn as director and Jürgen Rose as designer spin the second episode of their theatrical retelling of Richard Wagner’s epic Ring cycle. Opera’s best-known incursion into the world of film music, the Ride of the Walkyries (Francis Ford Coppola’s gaggle of helicopters swooping over Vietnam as the smell of napalm rises in the morning) is only one of many great musical moments of The Walkyrie. Siegmund’s spring song and his love duet with Sieglinde, Brünnhilde’s plea to Wotan, the Magic Fire music at the end of the opera are all waiting to ignite the audience’s applause.
